What is CRM?
CRM, or Customer Relationship Management, is a cornerstone of digital marketing. A good CRM programme is essential for understanding your audience and their behaviour. It saves you time while tracking customer behaviour, managing new leads, and personalising your audience’s experience – all leading to a highly engaged, active consumer base.
- Contact management – centralise your customer and lead data.
- Communication – speak to your audience through SMS, email or push notifications. (If you’re old-fashioned, maybe even through letters.)
- Data analysis & reporting – track opens, clicks, even sales. Identify whether your CRM programme is working.
- Workflow automation – save yourself some time by automating core processes like welcome journeys and email resends.
A good CRM programme offers you so much more. One of the most valuable benefits of a good CRM programme is that it allows you to truly understand your customer – and to show them you understand. You do this through personalisation and segmentation.

Personalisation
First, understand your customer preferences. Past purchases, browsing behaviour, and communication history can all be stored in your CRM system. You can use this to tailor your messaging to each customer’s unique interests.
Next, automate it. Take your workflow automation to the next level by creating personalised journeys. A journey for the customer who abandoned their cart, a free treat for a new customer, or 10% off for the regular customer who hasn’t bought anything recently.
Personalisation in bulk communications is a bit of a trick – to the consumer, it looks like that 10% offer came at *just* the right time. To your CRM system, it’s just another contact who triggered the journey – set up once and left to run on its own.
Segmentation
Segmentation is another valuable tool you’ll have access to with a good CRM programme. You’ll probably have some element of segmentation in a basic programme too – just enough to make sure you’re not sending your Australian audience winter-themed emails in December. Demographic segmentation is often the first step taken towards optimising content for your audience, but you can dive deeper.
Let’s look at behavioural segmentation. Using those same customer preferences that allowed you to personalise your audience, create campaigns to target your audience on a broader scale. Create a campaign for everyone who has viewed a certain product, send your highly engaged users a special offer, or offer reengagement incentives to those who haven’t opened an email in a few months.
Now, lifecycle segmentation. As customers move through different stages in their buying journey – from awareness to consideration to purchase – your CRM programme can make sure you’re not telling your regular purchasers how to use your product, and your new contacts can hear about all the first-time discounts available to them.
Why personalisation and segmentation matter
When you leverage CRM for personalisation and segmentation, you create a more engaging and relevant experience for your customers and strengthen the relationship between your brand and the consumer.
- Higher Customer Satisfaction: Personalised interactions make your customers feel valued, increasing their satisfaction.
- Improved Marketing ROI: Targeted campaigns create higher conversion rates, maximising return on investment.
- Stronger Customer Relationships: Personalisation fosters loyalty, leading to long-term customer relationships.
- Higher Engagement: Targeted campaigns increase your customer’s interest in your brand and brings up your engagement stats.
Conclusion
CRM can and should be more than just those 4 core functions. You should be using it to drive your business success, with your customers front and centre. Leverage the personalisation and segmentation capabilities of your CRM system alongside a well-structured programme, and you’ll have better engagement, happier customers and more sales. As mentioned before – a good CRM programme is essential.
